RCIA

“Come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you. Take my yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. Your souls will find rest, for my yoke is easy and my burden light.” - Matthew 11:28-30.

RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is the Catholic Church’s way of initiating new members. RCIA is much more than a program. It is a learning and loving process in which conversion of the heart brings one to Jesus Christ.

RCIA is an opportunity:

  • For those who have not been baptised.
  • For those who have been baptised, but have little affiliation with, and/or training in the Catholic Religion.
  • For those who want to learn and ask questions about the Catholic Faith.

Through weekly meetings, those attending gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Catholic beliefs and practices. All are welcome and there is no obligation to make any commitment to become Catholic. Our classes will start in September. If you are interested, please contact the Parish Office via email: office.stjohnogilviesedinburgh@staned.org.uk or phone 0131 453 5035

Prayer for Grandparents

Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary,
the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Look with love on grandparents the world over.
Protect them! They are a source of enrichment
for families, for the Church and for all of society.

Support them! As they grow older,
may they continue to be for their families
strong pillars of Gospel faith,
guardians of noble domestic ideals,
living treasuries of sound religious traditions.
Make them teachers of wisdom and courage,
that they may pass on to future generations the fruits
of their mature human and spiritual experience.

Lord Jesus, help families and society
to value the presence and role of grandparents.
May they never be ignored or excluded,
but always encounter respect and love.
Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed
in all the years of life which you give them.

Mary, Mother of all the living,
keep grandparents constantly in your care,
accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage,
and by your prayers, grant that all families
may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland,
where you await all humanity
for the great embrace of life without end. Amen!

Fr. Tony’s Retiral Collection

A huge ‘Thank you’ to all for your very generous donations which have amounted to £1200. The card, which was filled with lots of personal good wishes, has been taken to Fr Tony and he was overwhelmed to receive it. He is disappointed that he was unable to say his personal goodbyes to all of you, as his departure to Dublin was quicker than had been expected due to health reasons. He is well and resting, adjusting to a well-earned retirement with some of our former Oblate Parish Priests.

History of the Message and Devotion to Divine Mercy

The Message of the Divine Mercy that Sr. Faustina received from the Lord was not only directed towards her personal growth in faith but also towards the good of the people. With the command of our Lord to paint an image according to the pattern that Sr. Faustina had seen, came also a request to have this image venerated, first in the Sisters' chapel, and then throughout the world. The same is true with the revelations of the Chaplet. The Lord requested that this Chaplet be said not only by Sr. Faustina, but by others: "Encourage souls to say the Chaplet that I have given you".

The same is true of the revelation of the Feast of Mercy. "The Feast of Mercy emerged from my very depths of tenderness. It is my desire that it solemnly be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the fount of My Mercy."

These requests of the Lord given to Sr. Faustina between 1931 and 1938 can be considered the beginning of the Divine Mercy Message and Devotion in the new forms.

Through the efforts of Sr. Faustina’s spiritual directors, Fr. Michael Sopocko, and Fr. Joseph Andrasz, SJ, and others — including the Marians of the Immaculate Conception — this message began to spread throughout the world.

However, it is important to remember that this message of The Divine Mercy, revealed to St. Faustina and to our present generation is not new. It is a powerful reminder of who God is and has been from the very beginning. This truth that God is in His very nature Love and Mercy Itself, is given to us by our Judeo-Christian faith and God’s self-revelation. The veil that has hidden the mystery of God from eternity was lifted by God Himself. In His goodness and love God chose to reveal Himself to us, His creatures, and to make known His eternal plan of salvation. This He had done partly through the Old Testament Patriarchs, Moses and the Prophets, and fully through His only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. In the person of Jesus Christ, conceived through power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, the unseen God was made visible.

Feast of St. John Ogilvie – Sunday 10 March

This Sunday 10 March we keep the Feast of St. John Ogilvie, patron of our parish. John’s noble Scottish family was part Catholic and part Presbyterian. His father raised him as a Calvinist, sent him to the continent for education. There he became interested in the popular debates going on between Catholic and Calvinist scholars. Debates gave rise only to confusion, John turned to Scripture. Two texts became his particular focus:

“God wills all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.”
“Come to me all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you”.

John concluded that the Catholic Church could embrace all people so at the age of 17 in Louvain, Belgium in 1596 he was received into the Catholic Church. In 1610 he was ordained a priest as a member of the Jesuit Order. Sent to Scotland as a missionary, where, due to penal laws, he posed as a horse trader and soldier but was betrayed. Brought before the courts, his trial dragged on until he had been without food for 26 hours. Deprived of sleep for eight days and nights he was dragged around, prodded with sharp sticks and his hair pulled out. Still he refused to reveal the names of Catholics. He underwent a second and third trial but held firm. Even on the scaffold he was offered freedom and a fine living if he would deny his faith. His courage in prison and his martyrdom was reported throughout Scotland.

John Ogilvie was canonised in 1976, becoming the first Scottish saint since 1250.

Blessed Francis Jordan – Founder of the Salvatorians: His Life

John Baptist Jordan was born into a poor family in Gurtweil, Germany. His family’s poverty prevented him from completing his studies and entering seminary and he spent some years working as an itinerant painter and labourer.

In time, he was able to begin seminary studies and he was ordained a priest on July 21, 1878. Father Jordan had demonstrated a proficiency with languages and his archbishop sent him to Rome to study Greek and Semitic languages.

Father Jordan became increasingly aware that God was calling him to establish a new apostolic work in the Church, envisioning a collaborative society of priests, religious and lay people who would promote the Catholic Faith throughout the world.

On December 8, 1881, Father Jordan and a small group of companions professed religious vows, establishing the “Apostolic Teaching Society.” At the time of his profession, Father Jordan took the religious name “Francis Mary of the Cross.”

In the years that followed, the Society Father Jordan founded was transformed into two distinct religious communities, one including priests and brothers and the other, a new community of religious sisters cofounded with Blessed Mary of the Apostles (Therese von Wüllenweber). Given a new name and now dedicated to the Divine Saviour, these communities became known as the Salvatorians.

Father Jordan spent the remainder of his life governing the community of priests and brothers and overseeing the establishment of new missions in several countries, as well as the ongoing publishing and educational projects of the young community.

Blessed Francis Mary of the Cross died on September 8, 1918, in Fribourg, Switzerland, where he had been forced to relocate during the First World War. He was beatified on May 15, 2021.

Today, Salvatorian priests, brothers, sisters, and lay members serve in a myriad of ministries in nearly 45 countries, inspired by Father Jordan’s vision of collaboration and universality.

Today we welcome Fr. Boguslaw Loska SDS to our parish. We hope you will enjoy your time here in Edinburgh and we look forward to getting to know you.

Fr Tony

We would like to thank Fr. Tony for his years of dedication and support to everyone in this parish. He will be greatly missed but we wish him well in his retirement back home in Ireland. Unfortunately, Fr. Tony had a fall in the house and although nothing broken, he is a bit bruised and is now recuperating at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea until he leaves for Ireland on Tuesday accompanied by Fr. Leo. We wish them a safe journey home.

For more information, please email ejcretreats@jesuit.org.uk

Message for Lent from Archbishop Leo
My dear friends, Ash Wednesday is this week and marks the beginning of Lent. It is a day of fasting and abstinence as we head into six weeks of spiritual preparation for Easter Sunday. I want to offer three things we can do in Lent. 1. Receive your Ashes. Make every effort to get your ashes on Ash Wednesday and embrace this day of prayer and fasting. The ashes signify repentance and death. When the priest places the ashes on your forehead, he says: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”. Or he will say: “Repent and believe the Gospel”. So, it is a chance to come before God in humility and to say sorry for our sins.

2. Take time out for private prayer. Pope Francis has suspended his busy schedule for the first week of Lent to dedicate himself to private, prayerful spiritual exercises. He is putting prayer first, and we can follow that example. Whether that means getting up a little earlier to spend time with God, or switching off the TV or radio, let us prioritise prayer each day in Lent.

3. Make sacrifices. Often, we resolve to ‘give up’ something in Lent, such as chocolate, alcohol, caffeine. Done in the right spirit, with an intention to get closer to God, this is a good thing. Let us also make small sacrifices for others, to help them, especially when it may be inconvenient to ourselves. That way we can imitate Jesus who sacrificed his life for us all. Please also read the Holy Father’s message for Lent 2024 at https://bit.ly/popelent24. God bless you!

Christian Unity Week 18th to 25th January
A week of prayer for Christian Unity started this Thursday, 18th January.

Christian Unity Prayer

God our Father, at the Last Supper, Jesus prayed, “that they may all be one as thou art in me and I in thee, that they may be one in us …” We make this our prayer also, as we ask you to send your grace and blessing on all Christians who are striving to draw nearer to you and to each other. Give us boldness to seek only your glory and the advancement of your Kingdom. Unite us all in you, Father, who with your Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Christian Unity Week 18th to 25th January

Christian Unity Prayer

God our Father, at the Last Supper, Jesus prayed, “that they may all be one as thou art in me and I in thee, that they may be one in us …” We make this our prayer also, as we ask you to send your grace and blessing on all Christians who are striving to draw nearer to you and to each other. Give us boldness to seek only your glory and the advancement of your Kingdom. Unite us all in you, Father, who with your Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, forever and ever. Amen.

No Slowdown for Pope Francis
There are no signs that Pope Francis intends to slow down. He has confirmed a trip to Belgium to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the Catholic University of Leuven. He has also spoken of trips to Polynesia and to his native Argentina, where he hasn’t set foot since his election in 2013. Before the death of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Francis has toyed with the idea of resigning and even stated that if he retired, he would be known as the “Bishop Emeritus of Rome”, not living at the Vatican but in a Roman parish, hearing Confession and visiting the sick. Since Benedict’s funeral, Francis has affirmed on the contrary that to him the papal ministry is for life, perhaps to keep at bay those who want him out.

Prayer for Peace on this Feast of the Epiphany

Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.
