Advent Wreath
A Symbol of Advent is our Wreath. Shaped in a circle to symbolise the eternity of God, without beginning or end. The evergreen foliage expresses God’s undying love for us. The four candles, one for each week of Advent, represent those thousands of years when the people of God awaited their Messiah. They represent Creation, Covenant, Prophets, Mary, John the Baptist.

During Advent the reader will introduce the theme of the Mass each Sunday and arrange for a parishioner or a family to come forward and light the candle.

Feast of St. Andrew, Thursday 30th November
St Andrew, Patron Saint of Scotland (as well as Russia) was born in Bethsaida at the Sea of Galilee. He was a follower of John the Baptist before he was a disciple of Christ, to whom he brought Peter, his brother. Along with Philip, he presented some Gentiles to Jesus and, in the Gospel, is named as the person who told Jesus about the boy with the loaves and fishes. It is said that he evangelised in Asia Minor and Scythia (a region of Eurasia, to the North of the Caspian and Black Seas) before being crucified in Achaia (the area of Patras and around, in Western Greece). The iconography of the martyrdom of Andrew – showing him bound to an X-shaped cross – does not appear to have been standardised until the late Middle Ages.

Today 12th November the 10.00.am Mass will be offered for all those who lost their lives in the two World Wars, and those who died in Korea, Iraq, Sudan and Afghanistan. At the PPC on Thursday 9th November Fr. Tony announced his retirement from active ministry. At COVID, for health and safety reasons, we discontinued Lay Ministry for Holy Communion. At the PPC on Thursday we decided to reintroduce Lay Ministers of the Eucharist. Could those Ministers who served before Covid advise Fr Tony if you wish to continue in this Ministry. Or you may have served elsewhere pre-Covid. I welcome volunteers - email st.jh.ogilvie@blueyonder.co.uk.

Pope Francis intervenes at the synod,
... calling clericalism a "scourge that enslaves God’s people”.

VATICAN CITY (CNS)
Pope Francis told members of the synod on synodality that they should respect and honour the faith of all baptised Catholics, including the women, trusting “the holy, faithful people of God” who continue to believe even when their pastors act like dictators.

I like to think of the church as the simple and humble people who walk in the presence of the Lord -- the faithful people of God”, he told participants at the assembly of the Synod of Bishops Oct. 25.

In a rare intervention as the assembly was nearing its conclusion, Pope Francis told members to trust the fidelity of the people they listened to in preparation for the synod over the past two years.

One of the characteristics of this faithful people is its infallibility -- yes, it is infallible in “credendo”, in belief, as the Second Vatican Council taught" he said.

I explain it this way: ‘When you want to know ‘what’ Holy Mother Church believes, go to the magisterium, because it is in charge of teaching it to you, but when you want to know ‘how’ the Church believes, the faithful people”, the Pope said.

Rebuild the Church
In the year 1205 as he knelt in the crumbling church of San Damiano before the cross in prayer, a voice came to Francis of Assisi (Feast 4 October) saying, "Francis, go and repair my house which is falling into ruin." Francis took this as a reference to the ruined San Damiano structure, which he then rebuilt with his own hands, but also to the larger whole of the Catholic Church. Through his simple piety and deep spirituality, he became a force for renewal that continues to bear fruit today.

Ten years ago, when Pope Francis took the name of the Saint of Assisi it quickly became clear that he too felt a call to rebuild and repair the wounded 21st. Church. He soon outlined his Agenda:
We must restore hope to young people;
Help the old;
Be open to the Future;
Spread love;
Be Poor among the Poor;
We need to include the excluded;
Preach Peace.

In the Synodal Pathway, the Pope seeks to ensure that all of the Baptised have an ongoing role to play in the rebuilding and repairing process. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if people could say this of us, believers: You person of Faith, you respect the dignity of all life; you are a responsible steward of God’s creation; you care for the poor, the homeless, the displaced; you weep for the trafficked child, the abused woman, the struggling family; you are compassionate to those addicted by drugs and alcohol. We notice how you reach out to victims of war and violence, and you spread peace everywhere you go; you are a forgiving and merciful person; you make sacrifices and yet you are happy in yourself. We want what you have. The Kingdom.

Children’s Liturgy
Now that COVID and work on church roof seem no longer a problem, the PPC at their meeting of 14th September discussed a return to the children’s liturgy. The room available is too small for the number of children and our experience of COVID has made us take more care in respect of safeguarding. Overcrowding.

We have worksheets for the children which are linked to the Gospel of the day. I will speak with some of the mothers of 7 to 9 year old children to help find a solution.

Health & Safety Bulletin - Scott Mackenzie
Following discussions with our insurers appropriate levels of Health & Safety training for clergy, staff and volunteers are required in order to comply with Health & Safety legislation and protocols. It is important that every parish is a safe place to work and gather in faith and to ensure that any insurance claims are honoured.

Catholic insurances Services has engaged the services of a specialist company (Worknest) to provide us with a set of online modules which can be quickly and easily completed.

There are 10 online modules in total. It is unlikely that most clergy/ volunteers would have to do all of them as it depends on the role that each person performs, the Parish Priests probably have the most modules to sit as they are responsible for everything that goes on in the parish; so they need to have a good overview. Priests and or other responsible parishioners will be assigned a licence each and staff/volunteers will use a different (volunteer portal) login.

A Reflection: Offer God your Imperfections
It is through our broken, vulnerable, mortal ways of being that the healing power of the eternal God becomes visible to us. We are called each day to present to the Lord the whole of our lives—our joys as well as sorrows, our successes as well as failures, our hopes as well as fears. We are called to do so with our limited means, our stuttering words and halting expressions. In this way, we will come to know in mind and heart the unceasing prayer of God’s Spirit in us. Our many prayers are in fact confessions of our inability to pray. But they are confessions that enable us to perceive the merciful presence of God’. Henri Houwen.

A possible smile
Two guys are walking through a game park and they come across a lion that has not eaten for days. The lion starts chasing the two men. They run as fast as they can and the one guy starts getting tired and decides to say a prayer, "Please turn this lion into a Christian, Lord." He looks to see if the lion is still chasing and he sees the lion on its knees. Happy to see his prayer answered, he turns around and heads towards the lion. As he comes closer to the lion, he hears the lion saying a prayer: "Thank you Lord for the food I am about to receive."

Voting Rights for Church Reps
Councillors are reporting that they have received a lot of campaign postcards and letters from parishioners across the city on this issue. The vote on this takes place on Thursday 31 August. It could result in the removal of voting rights of Church Representatives on its Education, Children and Families Committee. That means they wouldn’t have a say in decisions affecting faith schools. Please contact your councillor to help ensure the Church has a voice in Catholic schools. Postcards are available at the back of the church. Received this week
A priest buys a lawn mower at a house sale. Back home, he pulls on the starter rope a few times with no results. He storms back to the yard sale and tells the previous owner, “I can’t get the mower to start!” “That’s because you have to curse to get it started,” says the man. “I’m a man of the cloth. I don’t even remember how to curse.” “You keep pulling on that rope, and it’ll come back to you.”

Click here for more information.

Voting Rights
Edinburgh City Council is considering a proposal to remove voting rights of Church Representatives on its Education, Children and Families Committee. If passed, it means school reps won’t have a say in decisions affecting faith schools. The vote on this issue was postponed and is expected to take place next month, so there is still time to contact your councillor to help ensure the Church has a voice in Catholic schools. Postcards are available at the back of the church. Find your councillor here.

Sr Cecilia Conway
It is with much sadness that we announce the death of Sr Cecilia in Swansea. Sister from Co. Derry served in St. Margaret’s school, Gillis until the “Ursulines’ of Jesus” withdrew from education in the Archdiocese. Sister then became an associate in the Cathedral Parish in Edinburgh and in 1988 she was appointed to St. John Ogilvie’s where she served for the next 27 years. We were blessed with her gentle ministry until health problems forced early retirement. In St John Ogilvie’s she served as Sacristan, Parish Visitor, JPIC, etc. For the past 10 days sister had been unwell. Her health deteriorated rapidly and she breathed her last on Wednesday 24th May. May she Rest in Peace.

Margaret Cecelia’s funeral will take place next Friday in Stella Maris. There will be a live stream via zoom.

This account has the approval of the PPC and Finance Committee plus the Diocesan Treasurer.

The new roof on the church will cost in excess of £218,000 so funding will have to be addressed again to meet this debt.

"The Mysteries – Reimagined"
Green Shoots Youth Theatre are looking for actors!

Are you between 12 – 17? Do you want to perform as part of the Edinburgh Fringe this August?

We need enthusiastic young people to join our new Youth Theatre for an exciting summer project! We are performing five short plays based on the Medieval Mysteries. This is a great opportunity to work with an experienced professional director and writer.

The Mystery Plays were the soaps of their day: warm, funny, but with serious intent – Bible stories brought to life - about real people in real situations.

Director Faith Sutherland will stage these at the atmospheric Undercroft of St Vincent’s Chapel, Stockbridge. Writer Peter Holloway has reimagined the Mysteries for our time, with topics that concern us all: climate change, refugees’ flight, war’s ruin.

‘ The Mysteries – Reimagined’ is an ensemble piece, with an emphasis in rehearsals on learning new skills, working to create a professional and dynamic production, and to have fun! Participation is free.

Rehearsals – Monday 24 July – Friday 11 August – 10.00 – 15.00
Final Rehearsal – Saturday 12 August
Performances – Sunday 13 August, 15.00 & 17.00

This year’s Lenten appeal focusses on the lives of Ruth, Juliet, Catherine, Savita and their families in Zambia. They are living and farming in the harshest of conditions; of hardships they face when crops fail, and they are left without food.

Ruth was so hungry that she was too tired to work in the fields. Her crops failed and there was no food for her family. She could not afford to send her children to school; Hunger forced Catherine to search for mushrooms to feed her grandchildren. She mistakenly poisoned herself and her four grandchildren. Their children are faced with the option f becoming scavengers or turn to prostitution.

Pope Francis on Lent
Ash Wednesday: "Free yourself from the dictatorship of full schedules."

Lent is a good time to examine ourselves in the light of truth, to let go of distractions like overbooked calendars, and to improve our relationships with God and others.

"Let us set out on the path of fasting and use these 40 days to take stock of ourselves, to free ourselves from the dictatorship of full schedules, crowded agendas, and superficial needs, and choose the things that truly matter.

"This, he said, "is the favorable time to be converted, to stop looking at ourselves and to start looking into ourselves."

Message from Archbishop Leo Cushley
Lent began on Ash Wednesday and it was a day of fasting and abstinence to acknowledge our mortality and begin preparing ourselves spiritually for Easter. Lent is a time of prayer and penance and I encourage you to take the opportunity to go to Confession if you have not been for a while.

Scottish Catholic
When we launched the Scottish Catholic in 2021 we believed there was an urgent need for honest, inquisitive journalism about the Catholic Church in Scotland. We didn’t know then that in the aftermath of the pandemic Catholic Mass attendance in Scotland would drop by nearly 50%. Inflation has driven up cost of paper and transport far beyond our budget. The most recent print edition of the Scottish Catholic will be the last in that format. We will move to digital publication in February. Ian Dunn Editor.
